We will go over them – but first, let me talk about what I learned at last week's JPMorgan Health Care Conference that I attended in San Francisco, and what it means to your portfolio. We know health care has a lot of angles too it. The previous CEO Roz Brewer was from Starbucks and struggled with the role that Walgreens plays in health care. You have to be following the transformation of Bristol-Myers, which is opening its wallet to buy a host of drug companies, including anti-psychotic firm Karuna. Health care is the way to go.

Eli Lilly just debuted its powerful new weight-loss drug, Zepbound. Normally, when newer, better drugs are introduced, they match the price of similar drugs already available or come at a premium . Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk have said that about 50 million people have some level of insurance coverage for weight-loss drugs. But some experts were skeptical, because employers and insurers don't typically pay the list price for drugs. Craig Garthwaite, an economist at Northwestern University, argued competition will drive the net prices of weight-loss drugs lower still.

Eli Lilly (LLY) remains our favorite way to play the weight-loss drug market, despite a new entry this week from AstraZeneca (AZN). Eli Lilly shares had their worst day of the year Thursday, falling 4.5% in the session to close at $591.32. AstraZeneca's encroachment on turf currently dominated by Eli Lilly and Danish rival Novo Nordisk (NVO) may have contributed to Thursday's declines. That approval, despite being widely expected, pushed Eli Lilly to an all-time closing high Wednesday, at $619.13 per share. Our desire to own Eli Lilly over Novo Nordisk hinges, in part, on our confidence in Eli Lilly's other treatment opportunities, such as in Alzheimer's.

LLY YTD mountain Eli Lilly's year-to-date stock performance. Investors are understandably cheering the results, sending Eli Lilly shares higher by more than 4%. "Eli Lilly today is beginning its next leg of going up," Jim Cramer said during Thursday's Morning Meeting . The most important line item was Mounjaro sales, which cleared Wall Street's high bar. Excluding that divestiture and the $387 million in Covid antibody sales in the year-ago quarter, Eli Lilly's sales grew 24% on an annual basis — a highly respectable figure.

Eli Lilly CEO Dave Ricks told CNBC's Jim Cramer on Tuesday his top priority was to meet demand for the company's drug, Mounjaro, which is currently only approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat diabetes but is expected to soon be cleared to treat obesity, along with other health conditions. Eli Lilly stock surged 15% Tuesday after its better-than-expected earnings report. He likened obesity to depression, noting Eli Lilly's role in manufacturing Prozac, the depression drug. We know that's not true, there's something called clinical depression," Ricks said. I think in five, 10 years we'll look back and think about chronic weight management and obesity the same way."

It's not unusual for a company's stock price to soar — or sink — on news of a CEO shakeup. So, CEOs matter when picking stocks — and at the Club, these are the five things we look for when evaluating the leaders of our holdings. A stock's day-to-day and even month-to-month performance may not truly reflect how well a CEO is leading a company. Trust has value, and the stocks of companies led by reputable CEOs with competent management teams can trade at premium valuations. Jim waits 45 minutes after sending a trade alert before buying or selling a stock in his charitable trust's portfolio.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, the committee's chair, asked Ricks and the CEOs of Novo Nordisk and Sanofi to commit to "never increase the price of any insulin drug again." Meanwhile, Novo Nordisk CEO Lars Fruergaard Jørgensen said the Danish company is committed to limiting price increases to "single digits." Net price refers to the amount insurers pay for an insulin drug after discounts and rebates. Sanofi said it plans to cut the price of its most popular insulin drug, Lantus, by 78% and reduce the list price of its short-acting insulin, Apidra, by 70%. At the hearing, Sanders called those actions "good news" and a result of public pressure.
LLY 1Y mountain Shares of Eli Lilly over the past 12 months. The FDA granted accelerated approval to an anti-amyloid drug — developed by Japanese pharmaceutical firm Eisai and U.S.-based partner Biogen (BIIB) — in early January. Investors may get one share in the spun-out entity for every share of the parent company they owned. What's left of J & J will be focused on pharmaceuticals and medical technologies, which were responsible for over 84% of the company's total 2022 revenue of $94.94 billion. It underscores that once free of the parent company tethers a divested company can chart its own destiny. Those priorities may not have necessarily been wrong when considering J & J as the overall enterprise. We believe J & J and Danaher are poised to deliver two more examples.
Eli Lilly, along with Sanofi (SASY.PA) and Novo Nordisk (NOVOb.CO) make up 90% of the U.S. market for insulin. Biden, a Democrat, on Tuesday called on Congress and other manufacturers to lower the price of insulin as Lilly had done. The list price for Lispro, a cheaper version of its Humalog insulin, is currently $82.41 for 100 units/mL vials. List prices for drugs often differ from what patients actually pay, including after insurance and other assistance programs. Ricks said the company's insulin price cuts had been planned for some time and were accounted for in Eli Lilly's December financial forecast, which projected 2023 revenue of at least $30.3 billion.

March 1 (Reuters) - Eli Lilly and Co (LLY.N) will cut list prices by 70% for its most commonly prescribed forms of insulin, Humalog and Humulin, beginning from the fourth quarter of this year, the drugmaker said on Wednesday. Around 8.4 million of the 37 million people in the United States with diabetes use insulin, according to the American Diabetes Association. Eli Lilly, along with Sanofi (SASY.PA) and Novo Nordisk (NOVOb.CO) make up 90% of the U.S. market for insulin. Drugmakers had previously priced insulin at more than $275 a vial, representing a 1,200% increase in price over the past 20 years, according to the advocacy group Insulin Initiative. "When you think about traditional drug and vaccine development and longevity of sales, it's usually much more spread out," Morningstar analyst Damien Conover said. The sudden inflow of revenue should prod companies to strike deals and link up with new partners, he said. Vaccine maker Moderna also expects 2023 revenue to fall sharply. The company's only product - its messenger RNA COVID vaccine - pulled in around $18.4 billion in 2022. Eli Lilly and Co (LLY.N) made $2 billion in 2022 from monoclonal antibody COVID treatments and is not expecting any revenue from the business in 2023.
Eli Lilly (LLY) reported mixed fourth-quarter results Thursday morning, but we're looking through the stock's post-earnings sell-off because there's no change to the pharmaceutical giant's bright long-term potential. Bottom line There's definitely some noise surrounding Eli Lilly's results, including sales of its key diabetes drug Mounjaro. Eli Lilly began its rolling submission to the FDA in late 2022. None of them undercut the multiyear Eli Lilly investment story, making Thursday's stock sell-off an attractive buying opportunity. It is a "very complicated" process to make that kind of drug, Ricks said, so it cannot just scale up overnight.
The pharmaceutical industry, whose members gathered in the thousands this week in San Francisco for the annual JP Morgan Healthcare conference, opposed the legislation and has begun implementing strategies to mitigate its impact. "In 10 years, we'll have far fewer small molecules being developed than we do today." He questioned the benefit of "rules that really just disincentivize investment in what ends up being convenient drugs, drugs for tough conditions like cancer and drugs that get really cheap when they go generic." Most medicines on the market today are small molecules, which can be taken by mouth, absorbed into the bloodstream and easily penetrate cell membranes. He noted it is not unusual for pharmaceutical companies to choose not to pursue a drug they once thought promising.
Eli Lilly (LLY) has spent decades researching Alzheimer's disease without successfully bringing to market a treatment that slows the memory-destroying condition. For Eli Lilly as a company, an Alzheimer's drug is an important pursuit. Lilly's Alzheimer's history Eli Lilly's "first real foray" into Alzheimer's came in the 1990s, according to Dr. John Sims, Eli Lilly's head of medical development for donanemab. Donanemab is the name of Eli Lilly's Alzheimer's drug in its own late-stage trials. JPMorgan has a neutral (hold) rating on Biogen shares and an overweight (buy) rating on Eli Lilly shares. What it means for Eli Lilly Eli Lilly has a phase three trial underway for its donanemab Alzheimer's drug that is similar to lecanemab, which is why the Biogen-Eisai data has been interpreted as favorable for the Club holding. Clumps of the protein, known as amyloid plaques, are one of the key markers of Alzheimer's disease. Previous drugs developed around the a-beta hypothesis — including those from Eli Lilly — have failed to meaningfully delay the disease's progression.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo/File PhotoNov 16 (Reuters) - Eli Lilly & Co (LLY.N) Chief Executive Officer Dave Ricks said on Wednesday that the recent imposter Twitter account incident "demonstrates some of the challenges" on the social media platform. Speaking at the STAT Summit 2022, Ricks described the incident as "disappointing" and said that the apology which followed from Lilly did not "happen quickly enough". The drugmaker had issued an apology from its official Twitter account, @LillyPad, after an imposter Twitter account with the handle @EliLillyandCo tweeted that insulin would be free, amid political backlash and scrutiny into high medicine costs. Analysts at UBS said Eli Lilly is their top Big Pharma stock pick. They said Lilly's obesity and diabetes drug Mounjaro will likely top Wall Street's sales estimates. The experimental Alzheimer's drug lecanemab could help boost the stock too. Lilly's stock gained 3.2% to $305.80 on Thursday morning. They also touted the potential of Lilly's experimental Alzheimer's drug donanemab, saying it has a 60% chance of success.
Club holding Eli Lilly 's (LLY) new diabetes treatment might become "the biggest drug ever" if it were to also get regulatory approval as an obesity drug, UBS wrote in a note to clients Thursday. Eli Lilly shares jumped more than 3% in Thursday's session. Bottom line We also think Eli Lilly is a buy here. As noted, Eli Lilly has a long history developing and selling diabetes drugs.
